The Nissan Qazana makes its first ever appearance at the Geneva Motor Show today. The Qazana concept is an intelligent, all-wheel drive crossover which is masculine, agile, lean, and designed for the tough city streets. Our team at Nissan Design Europe in London realised this image with the motif of a modern day beach buggy and four-seat motor-bike,” explains Atsushi Maeda, Studio Chief Designer, Nissan Design Europe.
According to Matt Weaver, project lead designer at NDE, Qazana was designed to be sophisticated but fun. By approaching the small car market from a totally different direction, Qazana invigorates, stimulates and rejuvenates the traditional town runabout.
Compact overall dimensions (4060mm in length, 1570mm tall, 1780 wide and a wheelbase of 2530mm) mean Qazana would be ideally suited to the urban environment. By mixing SUV and sports car styling cues, NDE’s design team has created a highly individual Crossover quite unlike anything else on the road. The tall stance, truncated rear styling and short front and rear overhangs underscore its feeling of robustness and strength, but the low roof line, assertive side window graphic and broad shoulders hint at a sporting ability absent in traditional all-wheel drives.
At the same time, rounded elements – notably the wheel arches and bonnet – evoke a friendly ambiance and provide a link with existing Nissan Crossovers. Indeed, Qazana has the signature Crossover design detail in the rising window line at the rear, also found on Murano and Qashqai.
Says Weaver: “Qazana follows in Qashqai’s wheel tracks by challenging convention. Externally Qazana adds a number of existing Nissan design cues – including a variation on the ‘boomerang’ rear light theme from 370Z – to a highly distinctive shape that’s unlike anything else in the company’s current design portfolio.”
Echoing a style first seen on Mixim, Nissan’s high performance electric coupé concept shown at the 2007 Frankfurt Show, the glasshouse resembles a crash helmet visor.

Effis city commuter car combines Nissan’s Super Motor and Compact Lithium-ion Battery with a fuel cell stack. Effis shows one possibility for future fuel cell vehicles (FCVs) that will require an ultra-small, lightweight design. An all-new concept is incorporated in the multiconfigurable arrangement of the instrument panel and seats. This arrangement secures comfortable seating space for three occupants plus enough room for one more person. The three-meter overall length allows agile maneuverability.
The revolutionary new Super Motor is a compact, high-efficiency unit that features two output shafts, both of which can be controlled independently. Because the power obtained from the two shafts can be controlled separately, driving force can be distributed to the right and left wheels independently. On Effis, one Super Motor each is positioned in the front and rear axles to allow independent control of all four wheels for a further enhancement of dynamic performance and stability.
The adoption of Nissan’s unique Compact Lithium-ion Battery with its thin, space-saving design increases packaging efficiency to achieve a smaller size and a lighter weight, attributes that are indispensable to a city commuter car.

Nissan’s super cool NV200 is a small commercial work van and mobile IT media hub whose pull-out tool shed is a showcase in creative space rendering. It was inspired by a professional diver, marine biologist and underwater photographer named Alex Mustard. The van is meant to double as a mobile office and research center and was made to store underwater diving paraphernalia as well as computer and mobile communications equipment, but could conceivably accommodate any endeavor from construction work to motor sports. The sliding cargo pod extends from the back of the van to reveal a workspace and living quarters. Inside, a computer table drops down from the side of the van, revealing two LCD screens. The front passenger seat swivels back on a curved rail to face the table. The end of the pod forms a bulkhead that houses a small refrigerator, sink, first aid kit and space to hang clothes. Water tanks supply a shower, which is fitted on the outside of the pod. A small generator charged by solar panels on the roof powers the electric equipment. The vehicle itself is powered by a “clean” diesel engine. If conditions don’t permit sleeping under the stars, a two-man tent accessible from outside is housed behind the driver’s door.

Aimed at providing young motorists with “a unique sensation of speed and exhilaration,” the Round Box compact convertible seems to combine design elements of a PT Cruiser and a Scion. The name seems to stem from the box-shaped top and round center portion of the body. An innovative, interactive “Play Catch” system enables the driver and passengers to share entertainment and vehicle information. Because the center portion of the dash shows vehicle information in large, animated computer graphics, occupants in the back seat can even see the display. Small glass panels placed close to the ground on both sides of the car provide passengers with a view of the passing road surface, “contributing to the shared sensation of speed” but “without the risk of road contact,” says Nissan. That’s a relief. The engine has been reported as a turbo charged direct injection model mated to Nissan’s advanced Xtronic Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT).

Huey Lewis once sang ‘It’s hip to be square.’ Few believed him. Mathletes wax poetic about the superior geometric efficiencies of a cube in terms of volume v. surface area. And get little respect. Cavemen discovered that a round stone rolls better than a square one. And, as a consequence, gave birth to the traffic jam. In 1998, Nissan introduced the original Cube, an aptly named box-on-wheels, to minor consumer interest.

But times change, and so did the Cube. In 2002, an all-new second generation Nissan Cube was introduced in the Japanese market. More spacious inside, more glass outside, more power under the hood and, more importantly, a few more angles and curved surface details added to its compact, slab-sided exterior. Quintessentially Japanese, this new Cube took Tokyo by storm. A pocket-sized fun-and-function cocktail mixing the charm of Godzilla and the wit of Mothra, buyers were smitten. And so, it turns out, Huey was right after all.

Like the Nissan GT-R before it, the Nissan Cube soon found an audience outside of Japan – not in person, but through its exposure in fashion and automotive magazines, videos and on the Web.
